Get Rid of Mosquitos Before They Harm Your Pet
Heartworm is a parasitic disease that involves a long thin worm that lives in the blood vessels and heart of infected pets. It is transmitted by mosquitoes and can infect both dogs and cats, although it is less frequent in cats than dogs.
The visible symptoms of heartworm disease may not appear until a full year or more after infection. Pets with typical heartworm disease tire easily, cough, and appear rough and unthriving. Blood and worms from ruptured vessels may be coughed up. Blockage of major blood vessels can cause the animal to collapse suddenly and die.
Heatworm diease is preventable with the proper prescription available from veterinary clinics. Check with your veterinarian about heartworm testing and preventive medicine for your pet.
Reducing your pets' exposure to mosquitoes will reduce its risk to this disease. Consider implementing these control measures:
- Remove all potential sources of stagnant water around your home in which mosquitoes might breed.
- Keep your pets inside during peak mosquito feeding times, which are dawn and dusk.
- Change water dishes daily.
- Protect your pet when outdoors with a mosquito trap.
